The Grounds - 20.22 acres / 8.18 hectares

odge entrance

There are three entrances to our property. The above is the entrance from the little community port of Sabalo. You can park your boat at the port, walk up a small dirt road for about 150 feet and come in through the above bridge and gate. A second entrance is our own little private dock and a third entrance is from the public road that goes past our lodge at the opposite end of the property.

palm grove

Once you enter the property from the bridge, you are greeted by this beautiful grove of palms.

palm groves

Towards the lodge, the coconut palms get very tall. Watch your head for falling coconuts!

palm groves

Our gardener keeps the lawn immaculate and free of fallen coconuts and palm fronds. The white-faced monkeys like to jump from tree to tree as well as the kinkajous at night so they often knock stuff down that the poor gardener is always busy picking up and hauling away.

lawn

The most wide open space on the grounds is between the lodge and rancho where guests do a lot of hanging out and relaxing after their day of activities. This area is great for volleyball, croquet, frisbee, etc. To the left of the lodge in the above picture is several acres of ornamental plants, flowers, fruit trees and other indiginous tropical trees including: ficus, mahogany, teak, melina, rainbow cypress, wild cashew, beach almond, cashew, mango, zapote, starfruit, guanabana, leechee nut, water apple, coconut palm, plumeria and orchid trees. To the right of the lodge is the large coconut palm grove also interspersed with many of the above trees.

Behind the lodge is our 10 acres of protected primary lowland rainforest. During dry season you can walk through parts of the forest and possibly see sloths, coatimundis, agoutis, tayra, ocelots, raccoons, white-faced monkeys, boas, green vine snakes, toucans, scarlet macaws, trogons, forest falcons, caiman, iguanas, turtles, etc. all of which we have seen in this forest.

swimming hole

In the picture off to the right is a wonderful swimming hole that comes up to just above your waist. It's great for cooling off and you can even swim in place against the current.

gardens

This is a cleared area tucked away from the lodge and lawn. It is an excellent spot for crops and already growing here are: pineapple, several species of bananas, plantains, papaya, yucca, chilis, guanabana, sweet potatoes, taro, squash and sugar cane (both red and yellow). This is also a great spot to put another cabin (if you prefer not to farm it) as it is very secluded and surrounded by forest.

garden

The above structure is near the lodge and is a small garden where currently we have purple spinach, cranberry hibiscus, ginger, tumeric and lemon grass. This is a great area for growing tomatoes, cucumbers, basil, squash, beans, etc. To the right of the structure is our covered "solar dryer" where we hang our laundry out to dry.
