About Sabalo Lodge

The previous owner of Sabalo Lodge, Nidia, is a Tica who grew up on this property as a child. Later Nidia and her husband Wilbure developed it into an eco-lodge.

The location is considered lowland rainforest with some of the world’s tallest mangrove trees and the largest mangrove reserve in Central America. There are eight beautiful acres of low-cut grass rivaling the nicest front lawns of any suburb. There's an abundance of coconut and ornamental fruit trees and a trenching system allowing the grounds to dry quickly after a rain. Most lowland areas around Sabalo will hold water after a heavy rain.

The property is bordered on one side by a flowing stream. It is a favorite area of guests who enjoy sitting in a lawn chair while reading a good book, drawing, writing or just relaxing. There is also a wonderful little swimming hole if you’re brave enough to feel the cool mountain water. The other side of the property is bordered by 10 acres of primary rainforest. This is protected land and is one of the few patches of forest that was not cut down for pasture land, farms or community living in the area.

Another side of the property is part of the world’s tallest mangrove preserve. The easiest way into Sabalo lodge is by boat though the mangroves. It’s a wondrous ride through this maze of trees and water. You will see a number of birds, possibly iguanas, snakes, monkeys and even crocodiles. You will be greeted by your hosts upon arrival with a straw and cold coconut.

Sabalo is surrounded by hillsides and numerous trails to explore. The mangroves can also be explored by boat or kayak. The fishing around Sabalo is nothing short of amazing. There’s plenty of red snapper and snook to be caught and we’ll cook it up for you that night for dinner.

We have kept Sabalo lodge simple while adding a few luxuries not found in most remote areas including: wireless internet, screened in cabins, solar electricity and a few other surprises to make your stay with us that much more enjoyable.

We decided to limit the number of guests that can visit the lodge at one time. This helps minimize the impact on this frail environment. It also ensures more contact with the native animals in the area and allows us to provide you with personalized service. We are anti-herd mentality ;-)

There are so many more things to say about Sabalo Lodge. This was meant to give you a general idea of some of the many wonders of this place. We hope to see you soon,

Dan & Holly Pesta
